What Time Is It in the US Right Now? A Zone-by-Zone Guide

Eastern Time is a useful anchor since it covers the most populous zone. Central is one hour behind Eastern, Mountain is two hours behind, and Pacific is three hours behind — a simple ladder that holds whether the country is in standard time or daylight saving, since all four zones shift together.

Alaska is four hours behind Eastern, and Hawaii-Aleutian is six hours behind Eastern in the summer (five in winter, since Hawaii doesn't spring forward while Eastern does). Atlantic Time (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands) is one hour ahead of Eastern in winter and even with it in summer.

Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands sit furthest outside the pattern, running roughly 14 to 15 hours ahead of the East Coast on the other side of the International Date Line, which typically puts them a full calendar day ahead.

Rather than doing the mental math, checking a live zone-by-zone board is the most reliable way to get an exact current time, especially close to a daylight saving transition when manual arithmetic is most likely to be off by an hour.

Before converting, confirm three things: which zone you're starting from, whether daylight saving is currently in effect there, and whether the destination zone observes it at all — skipping that last check is the most common source of an hour-long mistake when Arizona, Hawaii, or a US territory is involved.

It also helps to remember that Arizona's relationship to neighboring zones flips with the seasons: it matches Mountain Time in winter, when Colorado and New Mexico are also on standard time, but effectively matches Pacific Time in summer, once those neighbors spring forward and Arizona doesn't.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands add a similar wrinkle on the East Coast side: they match Eastern Daylight Time exactly in summer but sit an hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in winter, since Atlantic Time never shifts while Eastern does.
